“Every place we visit has its story, but we can picture a story through our vision of that place, too,” said Portuguese photographer and artist Patricia Marques about these photos she took in a small island in the south of Portugal. In order to capture her own vision of this seaside idyll that she found peculiar, she turned to her trusty favorite, a Canon AE-1 paired with mostly Kodak Portra and Fuji Superia films.
“In this place bathed by the sea, there is an imposing lighthouse wich illuminates the whole island with its brightness. We can see fishermen and their loyal dogs waking up early and greeting the neighbors. There are no cars, so it’s a place where you really can rest and be within the nature, the food is amazing and we’re almost all the time at the beach.
“I can still feel the sun gently burning my skin, I can still hear the sound of the waves, I can see the lighthouse and its rays of light at night and this is what I’ve always wanted, to have pictures that make me look back on time and make my heart smile.”
While she didn’t have a narrative imagined at the time, being at peace with herself as she enjoyed the island’s scenery enabled Patricia to effortlessly weave harmony between her images. Aside from highlighting its pristine beauty, her goal was also to express the calmness that she felt emanating from it.
“I wasn’t feeling the pressure to create images in a certain way, so it just flowed and when I first saw the final results, I immediately felt attached to them.”
Lisbon-based Patricia began her film photography journey when she discovered her father’s old camera, finding the experience special and mysterious as she never felt that curiosity and that magical feeling with digital cameras. “A brand a new world appeared in front of my eyes and somehow, in that moment, I knew that this would be what I would love to do for the rest of my life, it’s really hard to explain.”
On her thoughts about shooting with film, she believes that at a time where we get everything almost instantly, the medium is a way for creatives to appreciate the process and the little details.
“And, of course, everything about shooting with film is magical; even the accidents can be a pleasent and a happy surprise!”
