If there’s something we can be grateful for in this digital era, it’s the ease of access to wonderful artists with just a click. Instagram has opened a vast field of film photography material which is ready to explore, so we thought we could share with you some of the accounts we enjoy the most. We have selected a group of people who carefully post original content daily and motivate us to shoot more and take better photos.
We know we are missing many more, but hey, feel free to join and share your own favorites!
Carmencita Lab (@carmencitalab) has become, just in a couple of years, one of the most consistent and professional film labs in the world. Based in Spain, they process and scan film photography with dedication and love. They take care of their clients and their feed speaks for itself. If you feel like stepping further in your photography, send them your material and follow the tips you’ll receive along with their email. If you’re in the United States, IndieFilmLab (@indiefilmlab) is another inspiring feed you should go check out.
J.C Epong’s (@undocumentarian) feed will challenge your guts. He portrays the face of social inequality with a refined technique and accompanies it with a raw definition of the souls he captures. Believe us, if there is a film photography sincere account, this one is the one you need to be following. We also think you should check out @economichardship!
We think street photography is one of the most challenging genres, as you need to master your weapon and be there in the perfect time and the perfect location. We believe that @photodre, @mooshoepork, and @prspc.tive are artists who understand the essence of it, and their accounts serve as a tiny yet powerful window to this approach.
Do you often feel like you’re staring at the still of a movie while browsing thorough Instagram? You must have stopped by the accounts of Glashier (@glashier) or Mariam Sitchinava (@mariamsitchinava). Carefully composed and made with wonderful use of light, their images tell you stories and we love being seduced by them.
Edie Sunday (@ediesunday) might be familiar to you since she is one of our beloved collaborators, but she is way more than that. She’s a brave artist who embraces the creation of her art from all the possible points of view. Expired film hides no mystery for her, and the craft of manipulating her creations has given her an identity that will let you know she’s here to stay.
We all love tangibility. We can’t help but feel joy in holding what we’ve just shot in our hands. But, taming the instant beast is not easy. Tricky (and hard to find) film, low light scenes, and not to forget the expensive costs of shooting it… all of these make instant photography a challenge. Even so, we’re sure you’ll find that @blaskovichs and @simone.carollo have all achieved amazing work with this medium, as you’ll find in their feeds.
Yes, we also keep an eye on the people in front of the camera! We are used to seeing them among the pictures of our favorite film photographers, but often, we don’t stop to look closer at what they have to share with the world. Sensitive, brave, sincere, reflective would be just some of the words that we feel they instill in us. @sara_hiromi, @rayvictoria, and @meredithadelaide are amazing examples of the other side of the team. Why don’t you check their feeds out to get to know the people behind the role?
Do you feel film photography is too serious to document an exciting adventure? Let us prove you wrong. Stop by @jorge_hunt ‘s feed and enjoy the captivating photos from his trips. Each frame will almost make you feel the calmness of the ocean and the refreshing ocean breeze from his trips. Other accounts worth checking if you take delight in fun, recreational photos are @patrick.mccormack, @stevenmillsii, @filmofdreams, and @ignaciowoolfolk.
If shooting weddings involves a great responsibility, the following photographers are not only among the bravest but also talented and fun. They run their business efficiently and they have the time and passion to share their knowledge with the rest of us. Are they superwomen? We believe so! Go check out the feeds of @festtagsfotografien, @tanjalippert, @2brides, and @maithalunde, just to name a few!
For our favorite film self-portraitists, it’s not only about including themselves in the picture. Their work requires telling a story through their own gestures. We think that more often than not, it can be unnerving even for them to see what they reflect. @bird.ee not only faces this challenge but also creates a genre of her own. Powerful, dreamy, and raw combine in her world; believe us, you’ll want to get lost in it.
Many might think this is like throwing stones over our own roof. We believe this isn’t the case. We like to think that the film photography community takes cares of its own supporters and we appreciate the effort everyone does to bring some of the most amazing artists out there. @analogfeatures has a consistent body of film shots and they keep the account active and ready to drool over.
Tuesdays are for travel on Whattaroll, so it’s only but proper for us to show some love for our favorite film-shooting travelers. These artists show the exciting destinations they’ve visited, as well their mastery of film photography as they explore. It may not be easy but we think our good friend @herrwillie is special because he keeps a fresh point of view that we love. He’s not afraid of toy cameras and funky colors in his travel photos, which allowed him to establish his trademark. We also suggest you check out @robhauer, @axel_guelcher, and @mrtn_rckrt!
This category might be the less surprising one, because if you’re interested in film photography, their names will be very familiar to you already. Yet, we thought they had to be in this list because they keep amazing us, sharing their personal stories through images and making us dream of telling stories as well as they do. If you don’t know @ryanmuirhead, @micmojo, @hannes_caspar, and @normengadiel already, you better start following their feeds. Be warned, though, you could find yourself spending the rest of your day looking through their soulful portraits!
